Today we are going to discuss the first chakra, located at the base of your spine (perineum). The Sanskrit name, Muladhara, means root/support, and that is exactly what this chakra does. This is the energy of grounding and survival. This chakra supports all other chakras and must therefore be the building block and place for all earthly matters. If we were to relate it to psychology and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, this chakra is directly correlated with the base of the pyramid and the need to satisfy our physiological needs. Money problems, keeping the body healthy, eating and day to day living are all wrapped up in this chakra. Muladhara chakra is a deep red color, which one can imagine the color lava in the center of the earth. The Hindus also associate this chakra with a four pedaled lotus, which resembles a square – solid, unmoving.

The universe must have known that I was living my week focusing on the earth chakra (of course the Universe knows – it knows everything!) in order for me have a juicy blog post because last Saturday (the day AFTER my first chakra series post) I fell down the stairs. On my butt – bump bump bump I go. So I have had no choice but to pay attention to my lowest chakra because my butt bone has been hurting all week! I am telling you it’s just one injury after the next this year! But it brought on an interesting perspective onto this chakra. The red, for the fiery pain I feel when I sit, to the square, of how my butt feels after being still for too long, to the grounding of having to get up and sit down very slowly in order to not feel shooting pain.

great post. I love how you related to the Maslow's pyramid. I have always been intimated by the chakras, for some reason. Thanks for breaking it down.About your fall…it is super funny/ironic how life gets our attention.p.s. I can't think of root chakra without thinking of a crazy espisode of sex and the city.
