Today I caught myself having the thought “I do not have enough money” for the millionth time. I swear sometimes my mind is like a broken radio playing the same tunes over and over again. As if saying “I do not have enough money” is going to get the Universe to realize it and say “OH well since Teeg doesn’t have any money – let’s hand her a pot of gold!” Unfortunately, the world rarely works out like that so my thoughts just drag me down. And down and down.
Which is where affirmations come in handy. Affirmations, or writing down positive things that you want, can help guide your thoughts. By writing down what you want, you start affirming that you deserve that. The trick is to write your affirmations as if you already have it AND it’s important to make it specific. Yoga helps explain why.
When you are taking a yoga class, have you noticed that your teacher is always encouraging you to “open”? Open your heart, open your chest, expand your shoulders, get those hips wide, feel the opening in your legs, etc. As you go through your yoga postures, you will notice that by opening your chest, you feel more open to the world. By placing your energies in creating expansion in your movements, you become expanded. As you focus on abundance in your practice, you become more abundant.
It’s the same concept with affirmations. In order to become rich, you have to believe you are rich. You have to believe you are worthy of richness. When the core of your being understands that you want and deserve something, your actions will naturally encourage this path.
You can also tie in the phrase “positivity attracts positivity”. I am telling you – do NOT underestimate the power of your thoughts!! And this is where affirmations can really help.
So today I wrote down my affirmations. I wrote them many many times to make the thoughts STICK. And hey if you don’t have time to write affirmations down, at least think it! Whenever you find yourself caught up in the ONE thought that really brings you down, acknowledge you are having negative thoughts, then use mental affirmations as many times as it takes to get that silly little thought out of your head.
Namaste.

Thank you for this post! I completely agree with you:-) In the past when money was tight, it would depress me, bring me down. Lately I let it motivate me, get me to where I really want to be:-) plus my affirmation will be shared in my yoga blog tonight, something I needed the other day.Love and Hugs,Terra

I also completely agree with you! One of my favorite sutras from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras is "In the presence of negative thoughts, think of the opposite ones"…so every time you think you don't have enough money, step back and see how you actually do have all the money you need. Stepping back into that place of equanimity is the best one you could ever take

My affirmation often is "there's always enough money" and somehow, there always is. They do work!

For some reason I thought you lived in DC proper, so I was surprised to see that "back road to my place" photo. Such a nice open road!

Amen sister! Over and over and over again. We can't control our thoughts but we can certainly direct them and thinking in terms of abundance and openness is the first step! Yay you! Life is a practice . . .
