Alright guys its Friday which means CHAKRA DAY!!! (click HERE if you wanna read the intro post first and work your way through). Today is a super awesome chakra – the fire chakra located right below the sternum. The Sanskrit name is Manipura (which means “lustrous gem”) and this third chakra affects the metabolic rate of the body. This is the will chakra. It defines the question “who am I”. This little powerhouse is where the energy to act comes from. The cold from the first two chakra (earth and water) is stirred into motion by fire and ignites the spark for life and power.
I love the way Anodea Judith puts it in the book Wheel of Life, “The first two chakras flow downward, subject to gravity and to forms already in existence. Fire, by contrast, flows upward, destroying form, and taking the raw energy to a new dimension” (168). This is where we start learning how to FLY. The purpose of our existence is stirred up in this chakra and we should use the chakra accordingly. That is why we reach to this place to answer our questions of identity.

This chakra is filled with power and helps us move through this earth with meaning. I love this chakra (maybe a little too much) because I am filled with will. I am a forcing current and learning to balance my energy for the good and against the will of the Universe is my ultimate goal. Seriously this is SUPER DUPER hard for me. Learning to juggle between letting things go and letting the Universe take care of me and pushing and striving for what I want has been quite the growing pains. But at least now that I am aware that this is the chakra to focus on, I can now pinpoint my yoga practice more.
This entire week I have been resisting my situation in life and I have been putting myself through unnecessary suffering. The inability to accept life as is has been acting as a hindrance to my attitude and the people closest to me. I think I need to learn to close this chakra a little bit =P
Yoga postures that really works this chakra include
- Bakasana (crow pose)
- Paripurna navasana (full boat pose)
- Ustrasana (camel pose)
- Setu bandha sarvangasana (bridge pose)
Namaste.
